Elkins Inn and Suites is a good base for visiting the local tourist venues.
Davis and Elkins College and its Augusta Heritage Festival in the summer; Train rides on the Durbin Greenbrier Valley Railroad leaving from the center of Elkins historic train depot and plaza area, this train host scenic rides to the high falls, Cheat Bridge, theme rides, Easter Bunny and Polar Express; Attend performances at the Gandy Dancer Theatre and the American Mountain Theatre where talent abounds; Walk Elkins downtown and visit local shops including Artists at Work; Come enjoy Festivals- Ramp Festival in April, Car show in July, the celebration of colored leaves- Mountain State Forest Festival in the fall; Historic Mansions – Graceland and Hallihurst- on the Davis and Elkins College Campus, Former Governor Kump’s House and many Victorian Style houses highlighting Elkins architecture from the early 1900’s. Elkins has been designated as an “Arts Community”.
Monongahela National Forest surrounds Elkins on the East. Hike it, Picnic in it and Fish the popular Shavers Fork trout stream. Visit Canaan Valley and the pristine Dolly Sods.
Ski options are near at Canaan Valley, Timberline and Snowshoe.
Civil War sites tell the story of the First Land Battle in nearby Philippi and three battlefield make up the First Land Campaign- Laurel Hill, Rich Mountain Battlefield and Corrick’s Ford where the First General in the Civil War was killed- General Garnett.
Visit historic Beverly- a stop on the Staunton-Parkersburg turnpike- and the headquarters where General McCellan wired President Lincoln of his victories. See their museum, their historic homes and walk the town.
